Report: Microsoft plans smaller sub-$600 Surface Laptop for students

Microsoft apparently is going back to its roots with a new “Surface for students”—a smaller, cheaper Surface Laptop that it reportedly plans to announce this fall.

A smaller, 12.5-inch Surface Laptop priced somewhere around $600 might not be the most exciting laptop Microsoft has ever produced, but there’s something to be said for cutting out the razzle-dazzle and simply selling a general-purpose Surface that targets cost-conscious consumers.

The new laptop, code-named Sparti, is scheduled to be part of the traditional fall refresh of Surface devices, according to Windows Central. Microsoft has typically used this period to release an updated Surface Pro tablet, as well as new Surface Laptops, and sometimes new Surface Studios as well.

BrandPost: WAN Edge and Secure Edge: One and the Same?

Wide-area networks (WANs) have connected remote office locations to corporate headquarters for decades now. Put satellite offices on the corporate network, so the reasoning went, and now remote employees can connect to all internal applications and data available to any headquarters-based cube dweller.

Furthermore, WANs extended the corporate security perimeter, effectively drawing a line in the sand around all those remote locations that attackers would be loath to cross.

Ah, those were the days.

Today, enterprises are likely to turn to SD-WAN technology to leverage a mix of private networks and broadband. The goal: rearchitect the WAN to afford connectivity to an increasingly diverse collection of remote offices, pop-up locations, and individual employees working from coffee shops, client locations, and today, from home – what we can call the WAN edge.

BrandPost: It’s Back-to-Learning, Whether in Classrooms or from Home

With two children in high school and the opportunity to work with many school districts, there is no doubt that back-to-school this year is like no other. Enthusiasm for getting back to learning is tinged with anxiety—for students, parents, and teachers alike.

Just a few months ago, schools pulled off an incredible feat to get computers and internet into the hands of students at home. The pandemic exposed the shocking extent of the digital divide. Statistics like half of Americans don’t have high-speed internet access at home were brought to life when millions of children did not have the computers and internet they needed to learn.

Nest.land Deno module registry leverages blockchain

The arrival of Deno, an alternative to the Node.js JavaScript runtime, has inspired open source developers to create Nest.land, a decentralized module registry for Deno that uses blockchain technology to store modules permanently.

With Nest.land, a distributed blockchain infrastructure is used to store the data, which is replicated “forever” via Arweave. Free to use, Nest.land has been production-ready for about two months.

The developers behind Nest.land list the following benefits of the technology:

Microsoft's Xbox Series S (code name Lockhart): What we know, what we expect

Microsoft came clean about its next-generation game console, the Xbox Series X, last March. Or they least revealed details about its internal components. Now, Microsoft's cheaper console, the Xbox Series S, is back in the spotlight.

That Microsoft should have a second version of the Xbox Series X is no surprise; Microsoft released an Xbox One S, and on Tuesday Microsoft confirmed that the Xbox Series S is real, and priced at $299. News of the cheaper console has been slowly leaking out, so let’s talk about what we know, what we don’t, and what’s likely.

Microsoft confirms $299 Xbox Series S as leaks reveal Series X price, too

If recent reports and leaks prove true, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles will launch on Nov. 10 for familiar prices: $499 for the Xbox Series X, and $299 for the Xbox Series S. After the leaks occurred, Microsoft itself confirmed the Xbox Series S’s existence, as well as its $299 price point.

It looks like next-gen Xbox information is making its way out on the web: Windows Central says it’s received the Xbox Series X pricing and launch information; Thurrott’s Brad Sams says he’s confirmed the existence of the Xbox Series S; and the WalkingCat Twitter account has some images of the Xbox Series S comparing the size of the (smaller) Series S console to the next-gen Xbox Series X. And Microsoft? After this reports surfaced, the company just went ahead and... tweeted it out.
